ANTH 452 - My Study of Expressive Culture
By Emma Coleman
From Carmela's Perspective
In a brief interview with a local makeup artist and beauty queen, Carmela shares insight on how COVID has impacted their makeup application.
Carmela had a number of new ways to manage new routines sparked by the onset of COVID-19 and mask wearing. Within this folk group, being makeup artists and drag queens alike, there were multiple ways to adapt.
One of the first ways that both Carmela and Makeup by Annmarie spoke about in their adaptation to wearing masks and makeup is to accentuate their eyes even more. With masks covering the entire lower half of one's face it is harder to draw attention to the artwork that is a makeup look.
Another way in which both artists adapted was through wearing lighter foundations and using more skincare. Carmela spoke about bettering their skincare routine since masks are constantly touching their face, potentially causing irritation. When researching this topic on YouTube, this was a common theme. I saw many videos describing ways that makeup artists can keep their faces and makeup products clean and hopefully free of the virus.
